Research that is geared toward improvement of fish farming technologies is done in the Hatchery and at Research ponds, several experiments are done to investigate the efficiency and profits of fish farming. In the laboratories apropriate anaysis can be conducted to investigate several needs in fish farming.Relevant research findings are disseminated to farmers through extension services, brochures and pamphlets.

Technical advice

Fingerling, especially for those fish species, which do not spawn naturally in the ponds, are artificially propagated in the hatchery especially for the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus)..

Extension Services

The techniques of fish production and feasibility of fish farming are extended to the members of the community, schools and colleges through training and exhibitions. Group lectures, visual presentations and guided tour of the Centre and short courses in fish farming are offered on request. Visitors are attended during official working hours that is Monday -Thursday from 8.00am - 5pm and Fridays from 8am - 4pm. Groups are required to apply for their visit 2 weeks in advance.Those who also want to be attended during weekends can be considered if they apply in writing and are will to meet the specified conditions

Information dissemination/ training.

SAC conducts short training courses for fish farmers, organized groups and individuals on request. Occasionally, field days are organized for the public. About 4,000 individuals visit SAC annually seeking information on fish farming.
