Sagana Aquaculture Centre(established
in 1948) is a Government of Kenya Station under the Ministry of Livestock
and Fisheries Development.The Director of Fisheries is responsible for
the supervision of SAC.
VISION:
To be a regional centre of excellence that avail quality warm water
fish seeds and credible aquaculture information.
MISSION:
Facilitating production of adequate warm water fingerlings for farmers
and promoting appropriate fish farming methods through dissemination
of appropriate technologies.
Location.
SAC is located105 kilometers North East of Nairobi, in Sagana Township,
Kirinyaga District, Central Province of Kenya. The actual site is 2km
outside Sagana Township.
Land Area.
50 hectares plot.
Site description
River Ragati divides SAC land into Eastern and Western portions. The
Eastern part is about 45 hectares almost level and within it are the
major facilities of SAC. The western part (5 hectares) start with a
gentle slope from the river and abruptly changes to a steep slope which
end as a dome shaped hill where senior staff quarters and guest houses
are located.

SAC collaborates with several agencies. The major institutions that
have been working with SAC are;
1 .)Flemish Inter University Council-Katholique University Leuven of
Belgium team up with SAC in 1992 to 1997 assisted in rehabilitation
works at SAC.
.2.) Oregon State University through Pond Dynamics/Aquaculture Collaborative
Research Support Program (PD/ACRSP), which has assisted with training
programs and rehabilitation of some of SAC facilities. (from 1998 to
2007).
3.)World fish Centre-Malaysia(assisted SAC with happa net materials
for a selectetive breeding program -2005).
4.)Moi University (training programmes, students attachments and research).
5.)Nairobi and Kenyatta Universities (Research and students attachments).
6.)Egerton University (Students attachments,vetinary works especially
in the monosex tilapia seeds production and other vetinary aspects in
SAC).
7.)Universitat fur Bodenkultur Wien(BOKU)of Austria (the BOMOSA
program coodinator) has provided SAC with feed analysis equipments,clocks
for automatic feeders,air pumps for the aquriums among other things
in addition to attaching several MSC students who have done very useful
experiments in feeding and growth in fish farming.
